St. Mary Parish

In 1852 the first bishop of Dubuque, Bishop Matthias Loras, advertised in Catholic newspapers that there were fertile soil and many opportunities in northeast Iowa. This enticed settlers from Ohio to travel to this area in covered wagons.
St. Rose, built in 1857 and located in the countryside, was the first Catholic church in Fayette County. In 1898, plans were submitted to build a new parish in Waucoma. Under the leadership of Rev. Martin Hogan, the first church and rectory were completed in 1900, with a school building to follow in 1915. The church was destroyed later that same year by a tornado that struck the town. In 1917, during the tenure of Rev. James Sheehy, a new church was completed, and repairs were made to the school and rectory.
Our parish enjoys leadership and service from the members of its many groups: Parish Council, Altar & Rosary Society, Sacristans, Mass Servers, Ushers, Lectors, Liturgy Committee, Eucharistic Ministers, Choir, Finance Council, Cemetery Directors, Circles for funerals and functions, and supplemental religious instruction for students. Our Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Queenship of Mary #1806 has maintained the tradition of May Crowning for nearly 20 years.
Our parish is known to be proud of its heritage, with members who are willing to volunteer when needed. At the same time, we support the other parishes in our cluster and welcome their parishioners at our services and functions. We believe that our efforts to plan for the future will yield a fruitful harvest by God’s grace.
